PRESIDENT’S NEWSBURST JULY 2012

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I hope you are enjoying a relaxing and fun-filled summer. It remains a busy time on campus on several fronts, including ongoing work on the Budget Allocation Taskforce, College Facilities Master Plan and Bond Feasibility Planning.  Also, we have said good-bye to many colleagues who retired. We are grateful for their service to our college and students.
Recently, several faculty and staff traveled to Brooklyn, New York, for a week at Kingsborough Community College. Kingsborough has been awarded a grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIFSE) for a project titled "The Community College Jigsaw: Putting the Pieces Together." GC is partnering with Kingsborough to design a flexible and adaptable model of programs that will have a high positive impact on retention and graduation rates. The trip was good. A lot of progress has been made since the project started a year ago in establishing our Freshman Academy, a year-long plan to support students through learning communities, contextualized learning and other important supports.  Our co-coordinators for the Freshman Academy are Tate Hurvitz and Natalie Ray.  Please feel free to contact them about any questions you might have or to get involved in the project.
FALL 2012 CONVOCATION
We are looking forward to welcoming our faculty back to campus at Fall 2012 Convocation on Monday, August 13 in Griffin Gate. Convocation is our traditional, start-of-semester gathering that marks the start of Professional Development Week, when planning and strategy meetings are held for the upcoming semester. Dr. Leeva Chung, professor of Communication Studies at the University of San Diego (USD), will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Chung has developed a unique and innovative style of teaching which has been recognized with numerous awards on campus, most recently the prestigious Davies Award for Teaching Excellence. At USD, she also is an affiliate faculty member in Ethnic Studies, and faculty onsite coordinator for the Winter Intersession in Hong Kong.
The title of the speech will be "Live the Way you Teach: How to Keep It Real, Keep It Fresh, Keep It Together." The speech will discuss the following:
1)      Teach from the Heart: Understanding the intersection of empathy, compassion, and complexity within ourselves to mentor others whose lives are different from ourselves.
2)      Teach with Purpose: Are you having FUN? Are you Flexible? Do you change it up like a pitcher?! Finding alternative perspectives and challenges to bring to class.
3)      Teach with Flexibility: What is organized chaos? Using methods that are not typically associated with structured teaching.
A continental breakfast will start a bit later this year starting at 8:15 a.m.  After breakfast, the Convocation program will begin at 9 a.m. Also scheduled will be introductions of new employees and the 2012-2013 Distinguished Faculty honoree. All staff members are encouraged to check with your supervisor about attending Convocation so that there is appropriate office coverage in your departments during the morning hours. RECENT HONORS
·
The East County Herald newspaper recently published a story about Lisa Ledri-Aguilar, English, who was honored with a statewide award from the California Association for Teachers of English (CATE). Lisa received a 2012 CATE Classroom Excellence Award in the College Division for her work in teaching remedial reading and writing courses that helps first-year college students succeed with college-level assignments, the newspaper wrote. Here is a link to the newspaper (see page 2): http://eastcountyheraldnews.com/papers/061412.pdf
·       Our Respiratory Therapy students recently competed in the Sputum Bowl on both a regional and statewide level. The competition is sponsored by the California Society for Respiratory Care (CSRC). The Sputum Bowl is similar in format to College Bowl, whereas teams of three people compete against other teams, a facilitator reads a question and then team members signal a buzzer and answer the question. Three Grossmont students - Alyson Payumo, Jamie Albertson and Paul Fisher - won the Sputum Bowl regional competition against nine other teams from colleges in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties. Then, the trio competed in Monterey at the statewide tournament against 15 other RT teams and finished fifth in the state. Congratulations!
