PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
|
I
hope you have been enjoying a wonderful summertime. We’re looking forward to
our Fall 2011 Convocation that begins with a continental breakfast at 7:45a.m.
on Monday, August 15 in the Main Gym. Be sure to dig out your favorite tie dye
t-shirt, dress casually and wear sneakers to protect the gym floor. The continental
breakfast is partially sponsored by the new Foundation for Grossmont and
Cuyamaca Colleges and the Grossmont Schools Federal Credit Union. The breakfast
will be held between the Main Gym and the Exercise Science and Wellness
building, overlooking the football field. Just after breakfast, the
Convocation program will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. in the Main Gym. If you
have a stadium seat, please feel free to bring that with you, too. We encourage
all employees to attend the fall kick off. All staff members are encouraged to
check with your supervisor about attending this activity so that there is
appropriate office coverage in your departments during the morning hours. For those of you who cannot get away from
your desk, the Convocation will be broadcasted on the website.

Win a prize for wearing a
tie dye t-shirt at Convocation
To highlight our 50th
anniversary celebration, a competition with prizes will be held for the best
tie dye t-shirts worn that day. Everyone is encouraged to participate and
possibly win a prize. Categories are expected to include “Most Colorful,” “Most
Outrageous,” “Most Faded,” “Most Attractive with Accessories (such as peace
beads, acid-washed jeans or flowers in your hair)” and “Best Demonstration of
Grossmont School Spirit.”
If you don’t have a
tie-dye t-shirt to wear to Convocation, then you can make your own (for free!)
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 11 in the parking structure. Just bring
your own white shirt (100% cotton) and then have fun creating your own unique
design using a variety of available colors.
Educational Master Plan
to be discussed at Convocation
GCCCD
has been working for several months on developing an Educational Master Plan
that will serve as the blueprint for our future. Our Educational Master Plan is
a long‐range, comprehensive document intended to guide institutional and
program development at both the college and district levels. The priorities
established in the Educational Master Plan will serve to guide College and
District decisions about growth, development and resource allocation.
Information for a trend analysis has been collected in six taxonomy areas,
including Society, Technology, Economy, Environment, Politics and Legal Issues
and Education. The information from the environmental scan has become the
foundation for our long‐term master plan. A brief update on the EMP will be
presented at Convocation on Monday, Aug. 15. Other sessions will be held during flex week
on August 16th @ 8:00-8:40 a.m. or August 18th @
4:00-4:50 p.m. room 525.
Keynote speaker at
Convocation
Vicki
Halsey, author, speaker and vice president of applied learning for The Ken
Blanchard Companies, has agreed to be our Convocation keynote speaker from
10:30 to noon in the Main Gym. “Learning is the gateway to optimal life
experiences,” writes Vicki. “Learning transforms people’s lives, and teaching, in any
forum, is the art and science of bringing out the brilliance that drives those
transformations.” Don’t miss hearing the keynote. More details about
Professional Development Week Fall 2011 can be found at http://www.grossmont.edu/staffdevelop.
COLLEGE COMMITTEE
WORKSHOP ON AUGUST 11
|
All
employees at Grossmont College and District Services are invited to join Dr.
Cooke and the Classified Senate at the College Committee workshop from 1 to 3
p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, in Room #455-524. This presentation will introduce
Grossmont employees to organizational structures and the importance of team
work. It will be a great opportunity for folks to learn more about the
California community college system, our district and college and our
governance process. You will walk away with relevant information and tools for
effective committee service.
Please
encourage those within your area (faculty, staff, administrators or students)
who are new or want to learn more about getting involved to attend. All
are welcome. If staff, please check with your supervisor about attending. Supervisors have been asked to find a way to
support staff participation as it takes an informed engagement for effective
collegial consultation. Please RSVP to Pat Murray at extension 7316, or e-mail,
pat.murray@gcccd.edu on
or before Aug. 10.

WEEK OF WELCOME FALL

Student
Affairs will host “Week of Welcome!” (WOW!), Aug. 22-26. The mission of WOW!
will be to provide a unified campus-wide welcome to new students and welcome
back to returning students via information and programming. The week will
be packed with information and events on campus that range from campus tours
and workshops to salsa lessons and the All-Campus Activity Fair. There will
something for everyone during this exciting week. All Departments/programs are
encouraged to host workshops, events, information sessions and/or activities.
A
highlight of WOW! will be a number of Information Booths on Monday and Tuesday
that will be set up at three different locations: Building 36 (east side),
Building 27 (east side) & Modular Village (west side). The WOW! Info
Booths are intended to welcome new and welcome back returning students, as well
as inform students of the services and resources available to them. At each
Info Booth, departmental and programmatic information is on display and faculty
and staff members are on hand to answer questions. We still need volunteers for
the Information Booths. If you can spare 1 hour (or more), please let us
know! Another highlight will be a WOW!
Information & Activity Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 24, from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. in
the Main Quad. There are still a few more tables available. Let us
know if you’d like to reserve one for your department/program. WOW! will be one
week with endless possibilities!
