AEROSPACE LEGEND WILL
VISIT GROSSMONT ON MARCH 18
|
As part of Women’s History
Month, aviation pioneer Col. Mary Wallace “Wally” Funk will visit Grossmont on
Thursday, March 18. Mrs. Funk was a member of the “Mercury 13” Women in Space
program in the 1960s. From 12:30-1:45 p.m. in Room 220 she will share her amazing
journey through her historic aviation career, to be followed by a private
reception in Griffin Gate with Grossmont Middle College High School students
and the Gillespie Field Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, an organization for
retired women pilots. In 1961, at age 21, Wally volunteered for the “Women in
Space” program. Only 25 women were chosen for testing. Wally underwent a series
of rigorous physical and mental tests and was third in a field of 13 qualifying
candidates. Despite the fact that these “Mercury 13” women met the same
requirements as their more famous male counterparts, Congress directed NASA to
cancel the final training phase of the Women in Space program. Funding for Mrs.
Funk’s appearance is being provided by World Arts and Cultures Committee, the
Grossmont College Foundation and ASGC. Also assisting is the San Diego Air
& Space Museum.
